Re: [SOLVED] xfce doesn't start after update

What display manager do you use, if any? Or better, how do you start XFCE? By startx, startxfce4, or via some DM (GDM, KDM, XDM...) ?

Have you tried different methods of starting XFCE?

I don't like that ICE I/O error. Do you have your /tmp permissions at 777?

Does other Window/Desktop managers work?

Re: [SOLVED] xfce doesn't start after update

I use kdm. KDE works but I prefer xfce, I would like to have it working... it was working, just stopped after updates few days ago.

/tmp has all permissions for everybody.

I haven't other ways of starting it... what should I do? type startxfce4?... anyway it's late, I'll try tomorrow.

Re: [SOLVED] xfce doesn't start after update

Log in using virtual console and type startxfce4. XFCE should start. If not, at least some hopefully useful log will be printed..

After another reading of your post I think the ICE I/O error is definitely causing the trouble. I am however unable to help unless I know more. Try running startxfce4, maybe we will be smarter after that..

it's true, the only error is in alsa, but it would be strange that alsa breaks whole DE?... and in KDE sound works as always... anyway, how could I try to correct this?

Re: [SOLVED] xfce doesn't start after update

Alsa is not what causes problems.. It only says you do not have master volume control. That is common problem on Intel HDA soundcards. Although I have to say I've nevere seen any alsa-related thing in X or XFCE startup log.. Do you know why it is there?

That xfce-mcs-manager losing its connection may be your problem - do you use svn version of XFCE? And is your system fully up-to-date? That line simply says that xfce-mcs-manager has stopped/crashed..

Re: [SOLVED] xfce doesn't start after update

I have no idea why alsa error is there but... i use arch64 with the same /home and xfce works there although there are the same alsa errors (.xsession errors from xfce working on arch64 below). I also haven't made any changes in my arch i686 configuration which makes me think it's bug in one of the packages...

I use normal (not svn) version of xfce4 and I try to do "pacman -Syu" every day.

and by the way my soundcard is m-audio 2496.

Re: [SOLVED] xfce doesn't start after update

I don't like those '/dev/sda ...' errors (Is that a Polish message? It's definitely a Slavic language smile I'm Czech so I can understand it a little, but I'm not sure what does "pliku" mean)..

Anyways, a bug in a package is out of the question - I use XFCE for more than a year in Arch and never had any problem similar to yours (although I had lots of others big_smile ).

How often do you upgrade/update your system (i.e. since when does XFCE not work and when did you do your last update/upgrade in which XFCE worked fine)?

Once again, even when it's strange (for me), I wouldn't blame alsa, nor any sound-related hardware for that problem.

Try purging your ~/.config/xfce*, ~/.cache/xfce* and ~/.cache/session* files and directoriess.. BACKUP them before deleting!!!

these errors are generated by conky, it's result of my laziness, but it's not a serious problem. and "pliku" is a version of "plik" which means "file" in polish wink

it stopped worked a week ago. As I said, I update system everyday, sometimes even more often.

it WORKS! Thank you very much!
