I am relatively new to linux, and seem to be having a problem with XF86Config. I have run xf86config several times, and have used setting that appear to work when I run a knoppix livecd (it does GREAT hardware detection). I have an ATI M7 mobility card in my laptop, and so I naturally selected the radeon server from the graphics card list in xf86config. I also manually entered the hsync and vsync values that are listed in the file when I do a knoppix livecd boot, and those seem to work in knoppix. Still despite that, the server keeps crashing on startup, saying the hsync is out of range. Gateway offers no information on what the specs of my laptop LCD are. It is a gateway 450ROG with a 15" SXGA 1400 x 1050 @ 60Hz. Posted below is a link to my /var/log/XFree86.0.log.
Any help you guys can give me in this area would be greatly appreciated since I know nothing!

This might not help, but I have a Gateway 450SX4 with a 15" 1024x768 screen and a ATI Radeon Mobility M6
I use 40-70 as my range, and have not had a problem. I called Gateway and of course they had no clue. If I remember right, I found the information on a site called linux-on-laptops.com, or something like that.

Am I right in using the Radeon server rather than the ATI one? Could you post your Xf86Config file so I can see what I'm doing wrong?

Try running xf86cfg as root, it should autodetect those settings and, upon exit allows you to write the values it finds to file. Also, I have an IBM laptop and was able to figure out my settings for xwindows (and a ton of other useful settings) at http://www.linux-laptop.net/.
As for the radeon in the config that should be fine, "ati" and "vesa" work for me with less video acceleration of course.
