Needing some tips here, I think it's time to retire my old HP Deskjet 840C. Any suggestions for a printer that works well with photos. I've looked at which printers work with linux, but what I would like is some tips from people that use them with arch. Not really worried about how easy or hard they are to set up, just which ones are good for photo printing as I've found a new hobby.

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 1270 which does very well with photos. The 1280 is considered an improvement for high resolution. Of course, if you want to get into giclee printing, that's different and very expensive. Depends on the resolution of you cameras.
PS: If you plan to use a lot of ink, there are volume ink systems for the 1270/80, and also very good discount cartidges that work perfectly.

I would second the Epson Stylus series. It would seem that HP and Epson are the only ones with good linux support. You can use all the features of most HP/Epson models in linux. I wish that were true for my Samsung printer :-(

I would recommend any Brother laser printer usually has decent support with Linux. I use a Brother HL-5250DN and love it. I have it networked and the native brother driver works great with cups. Has a web browser interface to help network it and is relatively easy to set up. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll have a look at the Epson this weekend.

Epson printing support under Linux is awesome, but be careful when you buy. Some printers, like the 1280, have only two cartridges: one for black, one for color. It gets really expensive in a hurry to operate. I currently have a R1800 and love it.
