Well this is getting on my nerves.
I have Arch installed on 2 machines
Machine1:
- Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop
- Pentium M 1.5 Ghz
- Mob. Radeon 9600
-- OPEN SOURCE ATI DRIVER
- 768 MB Ram
Machine2:
- Core 2 Duo @ 3.4Ghz
- Nvidia 8800gts
-- Newest Nvidia driver in repos
- 3 GB Ram
Okay... So I thought i could tell the laptop just felt better when running beryl. I fired up the bechmark and sure enough, about 190 fps on the laptop and just under 60 on the desktop.
Grr... is this just a driver issue? Here's my xorg.conf file(desktop):

Yes, but isn't a 4 year old mobile chip using an open source driver outperforming a brand new 8800 by more than 3 times a little outrageous?
I think there must be more going on here than a horrible driver. -- Well I would assume anyhow.

Just a stab in the dark, but 60fps sounds like it might be limited to screen refresh rate, maybe? Do you notice any lags in performance when you use your desktop for high-stress 3d applications (ie. games), or is it just your benchmark number that's the problem?

I think you're right. When I used Compiz, my fps were stuck to 60 too.

I haven't tried any games yet, but when I was troubleshooting yesterday I did think it may be a VSync issue. However... it's not a beryl setting because i've installed the same package on my laptop (which is also a 60hz screen) and as it is running around 190fps.
So, I assume that if there is Vsync in my way that it's a driver setting in xorg.conf. That's where my knowledge is limited. I understand how the file works, but am very novice with what flags/options i have of my Nvidia driver.
So if anyone could make any suggestions there, I'll try them out.

Well... I figured it out.
Beryl settings has a Vsync option i never noticed. Deselected that an my framerate shot to well over 3000
