alsa or oss

I read that OSS is free now...
I remember years ago when I had much less problems with oss drivers as with alsa. I have a problem with microphone (loudness) which works on my wife computer with windows correct. Should be better sound and less problems if I install OSS drivers?

Thanks in advance.

Re: alsa or oss

Try (oss-linux in AUR) and compare.

In my case (M-Audio Revolution 5.1, envy24ht driver) OSS enabled me to use my headphone jack on the soundcard and provided a nice per app volume mixer, lacked some of dmix annoyances too. On the other hand, sound didn't want to work in Skype.

I would give alsa my vote to. wink

lumiwa, could you describe your problem, is the sound to much/not enough? or is it some other problem (I'm not sure what you meant with loudness hmm)?

Microphone doesn't works correct: sound is to low and when I talk on Skype a person on the other side hear me very bad. It works before but about two weeks is not usable. I did try microphone on my wifes computer with Windows and there are no problem. I tried everything with alsamixer and with KMix but results is the same. I tried on the Debian system today on the friend computer and works good too and he has the same options on alsamixer and KMix which I tried.
