fam on XFCE4

I have fam listed in the daemons array of rc.conf and on boot it calls portmap, and both fam and portmap load fine. However, I noticed my desktop was not refreshing loadd fam again with "/etc/rc.d/fam start" and it successfully loaded. Still the desktop did not refresh itself so to test I did "/etc/rc.d/fam stop" which failed indicating that fam crashes immediately after it loads. Also, when I shutdown the computer, the "Stopping File Alteration Monitor" message outputs a failure as well.

I'm using arch x86_64, latest kernel and everything, any suggestions?

yes, famd[5568]: can't register with portmapper. i know that fam calls portmap to start though and at boot it successfully launches and successfully stops at halt...

here is my daemons from rc.conf: DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !network !netfs crond hal fam wicd cpufreqd alsa laptop-mode)

Re: fam on XFCE4

It might seem a strange suggestion, but try moving fam to the end of the daemon list.  I was having trouble with loading and that seemed to fix it....

Re: fam on XFCE4

Have you tried gamin?  I was having similar issues with desktop updates when I was suing fam.  In addition when opening thunar for the first time it could take up to 5 minutes before a window came up.  I built gamin with the pkgbuild in aur and everything is working fine for me now.  The pkgbuild is a little out of date but you can build the newest version of gamin just by changing the pkgver in the pkgbuild.

Re: fam on XFCE4

if you have networkmanager in your rc.conf DAEMONS, make sure to put fam _after_ networkmanager. fam before networkmanager causes fam to start, but not work. several people had this problem already.

Re: fam on XFCE4

putting fam last definitely helped, it still crashes at initial boot but after a "/etc/rc.d/fam start" it loads fine although it still complains about not registering with portmapper. is gamin any different than fam?

gamin does only monitor local filesystems, whereas fam takes care of both local and networked fs

Re: fam on XFCE4

Gamin isn't a deamon, so you don't need to put anything in rc.conf.  Just having it installed should be enough, but you'll probably need to at least restart X before XFCE will pick up that its there.
