missing mime types

I'm building a php application which accepts file uploads and works out the mime type using the mime_content_type function. When uploaded through firefox, all files are showing up as "text/plain".

I don't know if function this has ever worked on my arch box but if I put the same code on a red hat box the mime type is worked out ok. I guess I'm missing something. Can anyone tell me what it is?
