In the "Properties" dialog (next to the device name after you click burn), I only have the option to burn at maximum speed. I need to be able to burn at slower speeds for some of my media. K3B allows 2x, 4x, 8x, etc. -- is there any way to set that manually with brasero?

What version of brasero are you using? if you are using, 0.5.2 then this is a development buggy version.
I think this bug is fixed in the stable 0.6.x series.

Looks like 0.6.1 is on the verge of release:

Appears August 29 is the target release date.

cool, thanks CB.
Strange thing is I just went to burn a 4x CD-RW, and all the other options then showed up in the menu, even though obviously I wouldn't be able to use them. When using faster speed discs, the only option is max.
So it must be a bug somewhere, as hussam said. I'll test again when the new version comes out and file a report if it's still messed up.

Actually, the new version released yesterday. I saw it on Gnomefiles. hussam already posted the info into Brasero's AUR comments, so we should see a new version very soon.
