If you use GRUB, append vga=XXX to your kernel boot line like this:
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda4 ro vga=792
For more information about what the number after vga= represents, consult /boot/grub/menu.lst.

I have read about this problem in a number of threads now, but still can't seem to get it working right.
I just installed Arch, and did a system update (pacman -Syu) and after reboot, the resolution is all messed up.
I've tried setting it with the vga=xxx option in grub, but it either does nothing, or boots to a black screen.
I've also tried setting video=ofonly from another thread. That too changed nothing.
I've also spent about an hour trying all the options with vga=ask with the same results, either no change or black screen.
I have nothing other than the base and updates installed.
I don't understand what I need to do to get a readable console.
Please help!
