What's a good video card? or Widescreen woes

I recently got a new wide screen monitor that supports resolution up to 1680x1050 , however I cannot get that resolution in Linux . I'm using the i810 driver (I have on board video:Intel GMA 950). Is there a way to get that to work?

But anyway, what is a nice video card that works great with Linux. I'd like it to be Nvidia, and price isn't an option. Also, will using an Nvidia card let me use this resolution?

If you can't get the resolution working by changing the modeline in xorg.conf or any other suggested way, you can use  xrandr -s 1680x1050 -r "refresh rate of your monitor"  you can add it to your xinitrc if you go this way.
your intel card should be fine.

Okay I'll try those out. Any suggestions for an Nvidia video card? I'd like to get one anyway.

I have a 7600GT/PCIe and are very satisfied with it. These cards a pretty inexpensive, so i suggest to get one...

The only rule i have with nvidia cards: Never buy anything below *600 (like GeForce 8400 for example) because these ones are just too slow for serious 3D (if you need that)...

I use a Nvidia 7300GT/PCIe and also a wide screen with 1680x1050 (Samsung 215TW) and all works really fine - full resolution.
It's a simple card, not so expensive, fast enough for office, browsing and so on. Even composite and transparency under Xfce4 works fine and fast.

I'm also using 1680x1050 on two wide screen monitors on two different nvidia cards. a nvidia7900 and a nvidia6800. Everything works fine. They are set up as independent screens.  The third monitor isen't a wide screen and it's on a third card nvidia geforce4. Anyway, if it helps, you can find my xorg.conf file in the wiki. It's the last one in the list.

The only thing I changed in the file since I posted it was the order of the font paths.

+1 I have the same card and it has been able anything I've been able to throw at it so far And I run it at 1680x1050, it was easy enought to set up in arch as well.

Awesome! Thanks everyone great help. Do you guys know a manufacturer that's good? I heard evga was something to stay away from?

Edit: I ended up going with the "intel" driver in testing which works.

There really isn't much difference between the brands as they are all made to the same specs.  The only real way in which they vary is in the price and warranties etc...
