I can successfully load Xfce using the radeon driver, but when I enable HAL and start xfce, the display signal immediately goes away and I cannot force back to console. If I disable HAL, xfce works again. Any suggestions?

What is "HAL" and how/where did you enable it?

HAL == Hardware Abstraction Layer, it's a daemon.

Ya, sure, sure... but what's the connection to Radeon/Xorg/Xfce?

I can provide logs, but don't know which ones might be helpful. I'm a bit of a newbie, but not afraid of getting dirty, which is what attracted me to Arch to begin with.
I'm using the radeon driver in xorg. I would like to load HAL as it would make a lot of things easier down the line, but loading HAL breaks the video. Since I really don't know where to begin looking to fix this I am trying to make this a bit of a learning experience.

First, post your MODULES and DAEMONS arrays found in /etc/rc.conf... that'll tell us if you have the necessary items loading.
Secondly, how are you starting your desktop environment? With startx? Did you make or modify the ~/.xinitrc file to contain all of your session programs?
