Arch upto 12 on DistroWatch

DistroWatch has an editorial on Linux Popularity, includes the Following link to an alternate survey. I thougth Arch's general position might be of interest. The Editorial using wider measures pushes Arch upto 12th.

Re: Arch upto 12 on DistroWatch

Well I've added 3 systems this week to Arch's tally, and have 2 more to go big_smile
I'm very impressed with how integrated everything is, how useful and helpful the wiki and forum are, and how much more memory efficient and responsive Arch appears compared to Ubuntu (which I've been using for the past 3+ years).

Well done, to the forum and project/developer teams. It's an impressive distro.

That's probably the main problem of Ubuntu, too bloated tongue Otherwise it's alright imo, especially for setting up a Linux box for other people (family, friends, etc..).
Quick to install and configure, many things work out of the box smile

12th?! 25th felt so much better. NOOOOoOooooooooo...

Just when I thought Arch was the best kept secret out there, next to the Hollywood moon landing and the Romulan squatting in the grassy knoll.

Re: Arch upto 12 on DistroWatch

There is some advantage to being higher in the ratings. When someone comes along and asks "what distribution should I try?" a common response is to check out the top 10 or so at DistroWatch. Although Slackware, Gentoo, and Arch are not generally suitable for someone who has to ask such a question (the installation is not trivial--especially to someone who may not have even installed Windows before), it at least puts it in the back of their mind to consider when they gain a little experience.

Re: Arch upto 12 on DistroWatch

Things never stand still in nature, they are either on the way up or down, and everything seems to point to the conclusion that Arch is on the way up, which surely is good!

I think there is a natural barrier to how popular Arch can be, but I think ultimately the place for Arch is up there with other great (as in truly distinct) linux distros.  @skoal: Arch was on the way up even back when it was at number 25, I imagine...

The question is whether growing popularity could potentially hinder the quality and the character of the distro, but I think there is no danger of anything going wrong in that regard as long as developers keep on making things KISS for us and themselves _above all_ - like they have done up until now.

On that note, I think this movement up in the popularity rankings, however superficial an achievement some of us might think it, is nevertheless a testimony to the strength of the ideas that make Arch what it is, and does credit to the great job done by the developers, so we shouldn't be too skeptical about it wink

Don't you think that your statement is a bit ...egoist?

I don't want to offend you, but don't you think other people should have the possibility to also have access to a power- and useful tool?

Re: Arch upto 12 on DistroWatch

Well, if it came across as egoist, that's far from what I meant about Arch, or it's user base.

I don't think you will find many elitists here on Arch.  As soon as I get back up to speed here, I will help my best in answering the plea of the distressed in the Newbie corner.  Hey, I used to know the recipe behind making linux sausage myself, but sadly, I've become fat and plump over the past 2 years just eating it.

Being 12th is well and good, but actually only the 2.5% of voters of DesktopLinux Survery use Arch Linux... It is less about one person every 40... It is really a little...
