powering down USB on machine shutdown

When I shut my pc down the pc itself goes off but it leaves power to any usb devices attached, this means my mouse and usb hub continue to glow but worse, my external hdd doesn't detect the machine shutdown and so doesn't turn off itself.

I've read about this problem on a couple of other distro forums but no one has any solutions.

Does this affect anyone else and if so, how can I get usb to go down with the machine?

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

IMO, this isn't Linux (or any other OS) related problem... This happened to my usb devices also with Windows XP.

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

This happens on two PCs, neither have windows on so I don't know if it is distro, OS or pc related.

In a thread on the the ubuntu forums people are saying that they have machines which do shutdown completely in Windows but not in ubuntu.

Did you get a solution?

I'll try to remember to check the BIOS next time I reboot and I'll try to dig out the motherboard manuals to see if they mention anything.

A similar thing, to get my PC to do wake on lan I had to run some software to set some flags, I assume in the bios, before it would work. This is even though I set the BIOS to do wake on lan in its own config editor. Could this be the same?

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

I have three PCs...
I've just checked everything.
OSes are:
1. Arch 2.6.22-ck/MS Windows XP SP2 - DFI LANParty Mobo/AMD64
2. SimplyMEPIS 2.6.15/MS Windows XP SP2 - Asus K8-N Mobo/AMD64
3. FreeBSD 6.2/MS Windows XP SP2 - MSI Mobo/Pentium4

The boxes with numbers 2 and 3 don't power down usb devices after shutdown. No matter Windows or *nix.

The box no. 1 powers down my external HDD, ADSL modem and optical mouse and it doesn't matter what OS am I running...

So I think it's not OS related.

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

Check your BIOS settings and see if you can find anything related? This might be farfetched, but there might be some similiar function in the BIOS to WoL (Wake on LAN), but for USB-devices? Perhaps also check if there is a BIOS update that fixes the problem?

I also believe this isn't OS related, all machines I've ever used have turned off USB-devices when shutting down, regardless of OS.

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

If this is happening when you do a full shutdown then your problem is definitely not OS related and rather BIOS related. The only time this can be OS related is when you do a suspend to ram or disk.

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

It is a full shutdown. I'll check the bios tonight. I thought it could be the OS after reading this thread on the Ubuntu forums

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=186779

The odd thing is that it is happening on two completely different PCs.

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

I've solved it on one PC but not the other. My desktop has a jumper on the motherboard which enables and disables power when off. The other machine doesn't have one (at least not in the manual) so I'm going to see if I can get hold of the manufacturer and ask them.

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

I have a related problem, and in my case it _is_ os related. I have my mouse not attached to usb (it stops working often if I do), so I have it connected on ps/2 with a ps/2 to usb converter. It also won't power down in some situations:
WinXP: no problem
ubuntu 6.06: no problem
archlinux or ubuntu newer than 6.06: the power of the ps/2 ports does not power down.

Edit: thanks dninja, it is indeed os related, typo corrected...

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

Don't you mean it is OS related or at least software related.

Before I posted my question I did quite a bit of googling and found a lot of other people in the same situation as you which is why I assumed that it was the OS that was causing the problem. As I said above, my situation on one machine was fixed by the jumper, the other machine hasn't got the jumper so I'm still looking for answers.

I reckon that there must be something in the software somewhere that tells the machine to do a full shutdown vs a USB power on shutdown but I can't prove it.

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

I have the same problem. My USB devices will turn off correctly on shutdown from Windows, but not from Arch Linux. IIRC, they did shutdown correctly with Ubuntu 7.04 when I had it on my machine briefly. I'm still looking for a solution. sad

Re: powering down USB on machine shutdown

I've just had a reply from Shuttle and they state:

Dear Shuttle customer,

We are sorry but the USB stand-by is always on. You cannot
disable by BIOS or Jumper. Only solution is a switchable
power multiplier. Thank you for your understanding.

So looks like I'm stuck with having to remember to turn the external disks on and off.
