but i've a serious problem:
hal doesn't load

[davide@davide-acer ~]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/hal start
:: Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer [DONE]
[davide@davide-acer ~]$ ps -e | grep hal
[davide@davide-acer ~]$

obiously i can't mount pen drive, cd, dvd and so on

also when i shutdown the system arch fails to stop hal daemon

i've tried to install previous versions of hal (different from the one provided by pacman) but with no results

Re: problems with hal

Run "/usr/sbin/hald" and check whether it spits anything out.

Re: problems with hal

Hym, that probably won't help. Your hald is dying, for some obscure reason. Try running "strace hald --daemon=no" and see whether there's anything peculiar in the end.

Re: problems with hal

i noticed this part in the output:

i have to say that i don't use cpufreq but powernowd (cpufreq is not installed)
could be this the cause of the problem?

here it is my rc.conf:

Re: problems with hal

You questioned why the "addon-cpufreq.c:1345: exit" was there - try disabling the powernowd in rc.conf and reboot.  See if that solves it.  I'm running cpudyn on my Athlon XP laptop, but I'm not running hal.  I had to make sure my modules line (rc.conf) looked like this:
MODULES=(video powernow-k7 cpufreq_powersave cpufreq_userspace cpufreq_conservative cpufreq_ondemand freq_table)
You may need to install some packages (described on the wiki) to make that stuff work.

On boot - do you see the daemon fail when it's loading?

Re: problems with hal

Un-mounting and re-mounting the entire contents of /etc/fstab (thus updating /etc/mtab) works as root and appears to clear out the issue.
Can you post /etc/fstab?

This was suggested before - did you do this as root?
# rm -r /media
# mkdir /media && touch /media/.hal-mtab

Re: problems with hal

it's not a problem of powernowd, because i had that problem befor installing powernowd (or anything else concerning cpuscaling)

hal doesn't give fail messages on boot, but it doesn't load
fail messages appear when the system try to stop it (and i think this is natural: hal is not running, so he couldn't stop that)

i'll post my fstab when i'll be back home
please don't leave me

p.s.: i didn't try to do

rm -r /media
mkdir /media && touch /media/.hal-mtab

because luke said that this wouldn't help
do you think i've to try (when i come back home)?

however i tried to touch .hal-tab and after that i got same error messages, without

Cannot open /media/.hal-mtab

Re: problems with hal

remove and create /media (and .hal-mtab) doesn't ler hal run

here it is my fstab:

[davide@davide-acer ~]$ cat /etc/fstab
#
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
#
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/sda1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda2 / ext3 defaults 0 1
[davide@davide-acer ~]$

is there somethig wrong?

another information:

if i try to do the "umount and mount" procedure while gnome is running hal doesn't start, how it happens if i do that in console way

Re: problems with hal

Your fstab seems ok at a glance.

I was going back through your output, and this jumped out at me again.

!  full path is '/usr/lib/hal/hal-storage-cleanup-all-mountpoints', program_dir is '/usr/lib/hal'
in hal-storage-cleanup-all-mountpoints
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure
Cannot open /media/.hal-mtab

Without Gnome running, try
rm -r /media
(don't touch /media/.hal-tab)
Then try and start hal.  Let me know what happens.

Try doing this without gnome running:
sudo umount -a
sudo mount -a
sudo /etc/rc.d/hal start
Post the /etc/mtab file after that works for you.

I have to admit that I'm out of my depth here smile  It feels like a permission or "file exists, but shouldn't" issue, but I can't say for sure.

Re: problems with hal

ok
i removed /media (without gnome running), but hal didn't start

then i gave this commands (without gnome running):

[root@davide-acer davide]# umount -a
umount: /dev: device occupato
umount: /: device occupato
[root@davide-acer davide]# mount -a
[root@davide-acer davide]# /etc/rc.d/hal start
:: Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer [DONE]
[root@davide-acer davide]# ps -e | grep hal
 5629 ? 00:00:00 hald
 5630 ? 00:00:00 hald-runner
 5638 ? 00:00:00 hald-addon-acpi
[root@davide-acer davide]#

the mtab is:

/dev/sda2 / ext3 rw 0 0
none /proc proc rw 0 0
none /dev ramfs rw 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts rw 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0

why sda2 is here? i believed that it should be in fstab only

after doing that i started gdm and everything work, but i can't do that each time i boot the system

i've seen the wiki page, but it speaks of problems different from mine (i think, do you agree?)
