interesting ati news!

have you seen this:
- http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … &px=NjAzMw
- http://www.linuxgames.com/news/feedback … n=flatview

ati released a new fglrx driver on a new new code-base (up to 90% better performance than previous fglrx versions) and they will soon release graphics specs for R500 graphics prosessors and up!
can't wait to try the games that didn't work good for me before and to see if the community can outperform the fglrx driver smile

What do you think about all of this?

Re: interesting ati news!

didn't they promise to open-source the driver?
otherwise... I'm glad hardware specs are released and there's a peroformance boost for you ati guys.
give nvidia a bit of healthy competition in the linux camp... yay lol

Re: interesting ati news!

It's definitely a step in the right direction. Opening up the drivers would be a great thing to happen, but the improvements yet to come in 2007 are already great.

Open drivers would make ATI more interesting for consumers than nVidia, this has to be taken into consideration.

I would prefer thinking about this in one year, to see where it went.

There will be specifications available and a skeleton driver as well; a free 2D driver is anticipated by the end of the year. The rest will have to be written; freeing of the existing binary-only driver is not in the cards, and "that is better for everybody."

It looks like they're abandoning the binary drivers for OSS replacements.  The current drivers will stay closed... but I think most, with exception to < R500 owners, would prefer to keep it that way. smile

Re: interesting ati news!

Great! And even aiglx support seems to be coming on next drivers (42) big_smile

Little bit sceptic I still am tho smile

But 50% performance increase would definately make me bash ati lot less than nowadays smile

Re: interesting ati news!

Releasing specs for R500 onward... They could of course release the specs of radeon 9000 series, too.. Those cards are still OK, but there's no real 3d driver for them. sad (compiz works but games lag)

I think the issue with that is some proprietary technologies in the cards <R500 doesn't actually belong to ATI/AMD, and so they can't release specs on it without breach-of-contract.  I think.

Anyway, I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on these new drivers for packaging purposes.  I'm quite excited!

more good news:

i really never thouhgt that ati (or nvidia) would open source their hardware specs, because then ati's competitor can use (copy) their technology. i'm really happy to see all of this happening.

Re: interesting ati news!

It's kinda neat to think about it, and realize that if this trend keeps up, a year from now people will be whole-heartedly recommending Linux users buy Radeon cards, as they're the better choice.

Creepy.

Great.

Soon, when the first good drivers are available, i'll have ATI cards instead of NVidia again smile.

Loos like they already released some specifications, from what I read on other sites these are for two specific cards and only the 2D part so far. At least they seem to keep their end of the bargain! :-D
