This may help somebody. To get totem-xine working with compiz edit ~/.gconf2/totem_config and add the following line
video.driver:xshm

Strange? I am using the compiz-fusion and could not get totem working without this workaround. Will delve deeper to see what is wrong. Google was not much help.

Sounds like a video driver issue. What cards/drivers are you both using?

I am using the xf86-video-intel driver with onboard 965 chipset.

I had the same problem but my config file was located at ~/.config/totem/xine_config
adding video.driver:xshm also made it work. i also have the intel driver and 965 chipset.

I found only need to use video.driver:xshm if using accelmethod xaa. if using exa as explained in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_Graphics you do not need to alter the config file.
