Chinese characteres in openoffice

I can view chinese websites in firefox, but I can't view a chinese .doc. What do I need to install or change to view the chinese .doc? I already tried community/openoffice-zh_tw

thanks,

Steinar

Re: Chinese characteres in openoffice

hi,
what do you mean by saying "cant view"?
I mean, is it the characters in a document unable to be displayed correctly? Or something else?
If the former one, try "select" all the contents, and change the character type to something available in your Arch.
BR,
bsdson

ps. cause we usually use the character type: (新)細明體,標楷體 in Windowz, which are not available in Linux.

Re: Chinese characteres in openoffice

I firstly didn't see anything, but after changing the font I'm seeing black boxes. Could it be something about locales?

Re: Chinese characteres in openoffice

openoffice has it's own language files. Also if you want good support for say English and Chinese you could add this to your .bashrc file

export LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
export LC_CTYPE="zh_CN.UTF-8"

of course you'll need those locales generated through locale-gen. Also make sure that
"export LC_ALL=" is not set anywhere or commented out because it will override any other locale settings.

Re: Chinese characteres in openoffice

You may also want to install the corresponding openoffice language files depending on if you want to use traditional or simplified characters, such as openoffice-zh_tw. Plus install some fonts like ttf-fireflysung or ttf-arphic-uming. Once you get those packages installed, then there should be some language settings in openoffice for Asian text under the options dialog. In addition, if you are using skim/scim for Chinese input, you can specify the  default Asian font in openoffice. So every time you open up skim and start typing Chinese, openoffice will automatically switch to the specified font.

Re: Chinese characteres in openoffice

Thanks everybody for the help. Now I can choose a chinese font in ABiword and view it. But it still doesn't work in openoffice. I added chinese locales and installed ttf-fireflysung. But this font doens't show up in openoffice, even after a restart.
But I'll use abiword for now.

Just a guess but maybe your looking at the wrong font name? The font is not listed as fireflysung. It is a group of fonts listed in Openoffice called AR PL NEW KAI or "AR PL NEW SUNG."
