black screen on resolution change

i got the problm that whenever i change the resolution(as example by launching an game) in one of my x-servers, the screen gets black.
a workaround is that i switch to another server and back, after that, i see the screen again.

hardware:
nVidia fx 5200
monitor:
BenQ FP91G X

any ideas how to avoid this?
