tightvnc font and graphics problem

I'm seeing a few non-fatal but irritating problems with some applications when using vnc. These are:

- icewm: icons are replaced by black squares.
- graphviz: labels are not represented, or represented by small rectangles with dotted frames.
- Plan: similar to graphviz. Text does not show, instead there are rectangular shapes where the letters should be. One rectangle per two letters, to be exact.

Most applications run fine, and that includes fluxbox, fvwm-themes, kde, firefox, konqueror, openoffice writer and eclipse. So it is not fundamentally broken, there just seems to be something in the above application that causes a problem.

The problematic applications run fine when viewed in a standard X session.

The problem exists both when I connect to the vnc session from a windows laptop and when I connect from the arch machine itself.

This is not an arch-specific problem  - I am seeing the same behavior on ubuntu (which is the second boot option for my machine).

Is anyone else seeing the same thing?

Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.
