Regarding repository shuffle.

I just saw this news post on the Arch front page about repository shuffle. This new thing is really interesting; possibly, we could have some script which regenerates packages against a fixed core, so that the core remains stable and we always have new packages? I do prefer the bleeding edge nature of Arch, but this change will probably make it easier for those who run small-scale servers on Arch (like me) to have latest packages without updating the core... just an idea.

What's everyone thinking about this shuffle?

Re: Regarding repository shuffle.

It can, of course, be discussed both here and on the mailing list - and on IRC also, for that matter. wink

Not sure what you mean by "fixed core", abhidg - the packages in the new core repository will remain the same, but they will be updated with the same frequency as base/current packages are now i.e. whenever a there is a new stable upstream release.

Re: Regarding repository shuffle.

What I meant is that someone running a minimal server could stick with a "fixed core" (just by not updating) and use the PKGBUILDs from extra to recompile against that core (if necessary) if they want greater stability. Of course for most normal cases, bleeding edge is fine smile

Re: Regarding repository shuffle.

I like the clarity of [core] being the base system and [extra] as the repository for everything else.

Will [community] still exist, or will it be absorbed by [extra]?

Re: Regarding repository shuffle.

Community will still exist.  Even though the line between packages in community and extra is about as blurry as between current and extra (if not more).  Community packages are those maintained by TUs and not the main Arch devs so that distinction needs maintained.

Re: Regarding repository shuffle.

I just noticed another thing while doing a pacman -Syu; the new packages have got the -i686 tagged onto them like in [community].

Most probably the essentials: kernel, initscripts, coreutils, bash, grub, pacman etc..

Re: Regarding repository shuffle.

according to the dev-public mailing list core should have what is needed to install arch , and do a pacman -Syu .
So the stuff in base + free network modules, free wlan modules , kernels and support for the main filesystems.

Ndiswrapper will also be included.

will a new version of pacman be released as well, or do we just need to change the repo names in our /etc/pacman.conf?

In both cases, I think you'll still need to edit pacman.conf manually.
Unless you never edited pacman.conf , a potential new config will be extracted as .pacnew .

Re: Regarding repository shuffle.

It looks the core transition is complete...or nearly so! archlinux.org shows that the packages have been moved to core and extra, and current is gone. The first thing to enter [core] according to the website is           bcm43xx-fwcutter-006-1.
However the core section on ftp.archlinux.org is closed [550 failed to change directory error]

I suppose soon we'll have a new pacman to update the paths.
Thanks to the Arch developers for all their hard work!

It's quite easy to change the configs in /etc/abs. You can copy supfile.arch to supfile.core, change "arch" to "core" (also do the same in supfile.testing) and change arch to core in abs.conf. I deleted /var/abs subdirectories (except local) and run abs. Everything has been recreated nicely.

BTW don't be surprised that *.core file is red in mc :-)
