Are you member of storage group?
If not, try
gpasswd -a username storage
This is the list of groups I am member of (type groups to see your list):
tty disk wheel games dbus hal video audio optical floppy storage power users abs
By the way: Have you installed the fam daemon? That's needed by Gnome and KDE for better multimedia handling (see Beginner's Guide).
Please consider to start fam after network or networkmanager in your daemons list! Otherwise your fam daemon will fail to work...

Ah Doehni, you are indeed a saviour
I added myself to the storage group and then checked that I had fam installed. Pacman -S fam told me that the latest was installed, so I checked /etc/rc.conf and there was no fam. Misfit138 asked if I had fam installed back on Saturday and I issued Pacman -S fam then and it told me that it was installed so I stupidly assumed that it would be in /etc/rc.conf doh doh doh (note to self - never assume)
So now I have a working Arch install which plays mp3's in Amarok, uses xorg 7.3 and Gnome 2.20 and can also play most other media formats that I can throw at it.
So now I will go away quietly and leave these forums in peace while I play with my shiny new Arch box and see if I can break it. If I can't me thinks that Debian Testing has met it's replacement
I must say a big thankyou to everyone who helped me, you are too kind

Checking for installed packages can be done by
pacman -Q packagename
Taht's easier and you don't need root access
I'm glad your box works now!

Have you added your user to the storage group?

Thanks for that tip Doehni.
And to Misfit138, I did add my self to storage and now my Arch box is running like a pure dream.
I hope Arch continues this excellent level of development under Aaron.
Cheers everybody
