Pidgin problems(2)

Hello,

I installed Pidgin using pacman, but I seem to be unable to get sound from it or to get spell check highlighting to work.

I have installed at least some dictionaries, the ones that make OO.org do its highlighting, but still nothing in Pidgin.  Am I missing a plugin or something that is stopping the show?

As for the sound problem, other sounds on the system DO work.  Alsa is installed and seems to be working perfectly.  Selecting Automatic, alsa, or manual and doing aplay %s seems to do nothing.    Any ideas?

Thanks very much in advance,
e^1

For pidgin I installed sox and choose "play" as the player for  sounds. I also use play for system sounds for kde. As far as for the spell highlight, make sure the plugin is enabled (right click tray icon > plugins).

Re: Pidgin problems(2)

The Switch-spell plugin  is not able to be checked by me.  Is there some package I have to install first that I might have missed?  I thought I had most of the spelling stuffs already installed.

hmmm

I also installed the aspell-en dictionary hoping that would fix it but it didn't help.

Re: Pidgin problems(2)

OK I got spell check working by upgrading to the latest version with pacman -Su, that seemed to make all the difference for the spelling.  Now, sound is the only thing left to get working.

Tried that earlier, no effect, they were already up to date.

you sure you didn't mute your sounds

Buddy List window -> Tools -> Mute sounds unchecked?

if that doesn't work try opening the system's volume control and turn up "PCM" level

Sounds are not muted and if you  read my original post, I have sound elsewhere, so I don't think it would be the PCM thing, but I checked anyway and yes the PCM is up.

......and then I did nothing and it now seems to be working on the command part, I don't know why that didn't work before :-/  so by switching to command and by using "aplay %s".  This is weird since I had already tried that several times before and I've made no real adjustments it will play the sound, but this is still not optimal since I can't use the Pidgin specific volume control inside the preferences.  But, if nothing else works this will do fine.

hmmmmmmmm.... puzzling...
