while it's great and all drag and drop toolbar customization doesn't exist in any of the other gnome apps.

there's a legendary by now post request asking nautilus devs to basically copy the code from epiphany into nautilus, apparently it won't be done soon, it seems that stupid previous design desicions make it a pain in the ass to change the toolbars (I thing they actually are using bonobo for that)... I had to say it, it's the one bug I'd like them to fix (I'm even learning gobject and as soon as I understand it and bonobo I'll give it a try... it will definitely take a while though, you'd better not hold your breath)

Nautilus is probably the worst part of the current Gnome Desktop and it probably needed a rewrite... but when you think of everything you have to rewrite to replace it...

I've got the impression that nautilus is "holy ground" for most of the gnome devs. I guess it's such a central piece of gnome that if you remove it, much other functionality from other appz that depend on nautilus in some way will be rendered useless. I think they should take a look at thunar, at least UI wise.

I think it's hilarious that the application that is most visible in the entire DE (well, that and the panels...) is the two pieces that lack the most configurability, from a UI standpoint.

I second that... Thunar can't even tell me when a file was modified... Oh nevermind, I guess it was modified "Today"... Well, that's great and all, but could you be a bit more precise? Maybe in the last hour? or 5 minutes ago?

Equally annoying is that Thunar makes you click on a file twice before you can drag it... What's up with that?!

Seriously though, both Nautilus and Thunar could benefit from tabbed browsing.  That's one feature where Konqueror has them beat.  I can't begin to count how many times I've wished I could press CTRL and click on a folder to open in a new tab.

I don't really like the idea of tab-based file browsing, I like the nautilus-thunat-gtk_file_chooser aproach better, however I do agree that nautilus should be burned down... and the forthcomming  gvfs is the best excuse to do it...

Tabs would help! I think nautilus should be faster to open folders with a lot of things too.

I never said nautilus is a joke. I said they should "take a look", that is, maybe borrow some code where appropriate and polish the UI a bit, or at least make it configurable, and not that rigid.
I actually like nautilus, apart from a few "annoyances".

Personally I like the mouse-gestures in Thunar.  The Bulk-Rename feature is also nice. I don't like that selecting multiple files at once and chosing "Preferences" does not work. That's where I like Nautilus better. And I agree, that both Nautilus and Thunar could be better with tabs.

I think nautilus is great. What's your problem with it?
I think it wouldn't be bad if the tool/menubar was more customizable, but I have no idea
what other than that could be improved. Especially the thumbnail handling in nautilus is great imo.
Nautilus very fast even on my machine. Ok, the download functionality also might need some improvement.
But that's mostly gnome-vfs' territory. It'll be replaced in the next release

I know that this is not supported directly by archlinux but I've got problems with Gnome menu in this release.
It's empty. Any advices?

downgrade xproto from testing to extra .. `pacman -S extra/xproto`

Check if /etc/profile.d/xorg.sh exists. If not re-install libx11 exit and re-login before starting X again.

hmm, the Roadmap for 2.22 only states that Natilus will migrate to GVFS, but I wouldn't expect any major UI reworks though...
