Re: Install form TAR file

Should be possible... Best way to do it would be from a live-cd, without dev, proc and sys mounted...

Re: Install form TAR file

I've already moved arch between partitions with cp, using tar would be the same as long as you make sure that file permissions are maintained. I'd use a live cd to do the untar'ing (knoppix is my favorite for stuff like this).

I've used the above guide a number of times - you shouldn't really need it, the whole procedure is pretty self explanatory, but it's nice to have something like that as reference.

On of my favorite reasons that arch uses the file system for it's package management.  There is no "magic", it's just files.

Did I mention I like plan9 tongue

Re: Install form TAR file

Great, i'm thinking in installing what seems to be a perfect system to me and then making a backup of it. When o mess my setup i'll just have to delete the old files and  copy the backup, for updates i'll do pacman -Suy. Much messier than formating and installing the whole system all over again.
Just another question, if i understand correctly ftp based installs don't work as repositories have changed. Is this correct? I have a 8.0 install disc and i install from ftp to get an up-to-date system.
