counter strike source crash

I successfully installed wine 0.9.4 via pacman and then installed Steam. Steam itself runs well. Then i installed CS:S via steam and that doesn't run so well.

This is the message that results in console when i click the "Launch" button on CS:S
http://pastebin.archlinux.org/14926

Visually what happens is the "Preparing to Launch" screen comes up, then it goes away, and nothing happens.

Running arch up to date (on current) w/ kernel 2.6.22-suspend2. video card is ati9700 and running flgrx (same thing happens on xf86-video-ati radeon drivers)...

I made sure I ahd all the fonts in the .wine/fonts directory,  sound has been tried in both ALSA and OSS modes, and as i said I tried it with FGLRX and XF86 radeon drivers...

Try disabling all things related to community. (the new way Steam handles the Friends-list and stuff)

Re: counter strike source crash

ok that helped... but not free yet

the next culprit is sound.

under Alsa enabled in winecfg i get the following output when starting CS:S

[munky@n00blar Steam]$ cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam && WINEDEBUG=-all wine steam -applaunch 240
ALSA lib conf.c:3949:(snd_config_expand) Unknown parameters 0
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default:0
ALSA lib conf.c:3949:(snd_config_expand) Unknown parameters 1
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default:1
dir: C:\Program Files\Steam\ *.mix
dir: C:\Program Files\Steam\ *.asi
dir: C:\Program Files\Steam\ *.flt
warning: Unknown nb_ctl request: 4
warning: Unknown nb_ctl request: 30
ALSA lib conf.c:3949:(snd_config_expand) Unknown parameters 0
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default:0
ALSA lib conf.c:3949:(snd_config_expand) Unknown parameters 1
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default:1

the menu screen comes up for the game (the image at least) but before the actual menu shows up the game quits and wine freezes up.

under OSS:
when i try to launch game it gives me the "registry in use" error.

Re: counter strike source crash

Counter Strike Source and Day of Defeat Source produce horrible sound when using Alsa (as set in winecfg) It says so in the wine database too, link.
So make sure you set that to OSS.

You can start the game with aoss, so other programs can play sound at the same time.

Here's my start up line: WINEDEBUG="-all" nice -n -8 aoss wine C:/Steam/Steam.exe "$@"

The "registry in use" error can happen randomly, so do retry a few times if that comes up.

no dice.

dir: C:\Program Files\Steam\ *.mix
dir: C:\Program Files\Steam\ *.asi
dir: C:\Program Files\Steam\ *.flt

the game loading screen comes up... the background pic of menu + little "loading" icon in lower right corner and then it crashes.

Re: counter strike source crash

What do you mean by this: "the background pic of menu + little "loading" icon in lower right corner"?

the game's main menu, the picture of the guy in the helmet + gun... thats what shows up, and on the bottom right of that pic is a little gray box that says "loading".... shows up just before the acutal menu options show

Re: counter strike source crash

I see what you mean now. I only once had a crash like this, and it was because I set the alsa/oss thing wrong.
If that's not what it is, maybe you should register an account on winehq, and post a question (comment) on the CS Source/Steam page.

Re: counter strike source crash

In the main Steam window (which has the "File View Games Help" pop-down thing, and the "Store Community My Games My Media Tools" tabs), click File -> Settings, under the In-Game tab is a check box which you have to 'untick'.
