Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

Hey, glad I read this thread. Count me in, when I do ctrl + alt + backspace it takes me out and makes me login using CLI and then I have to type startx to get back into desktop. Then if I do ctrl + alt + backspace it again it just drops me to CLI without making me login. Again I have to type startx to get back in desktop.

All I did was install slim and this behavior has been like that since day one on two different installations of arch. I say confirmed bug!

I have really found nothing, but I didn't delve into the code too much. I have a feeling it's a simple upstream bug.

Then maybe you have an idea which packages I should downgrade to get rid of this bug?

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

Ok, I switched to thayer/peets method. It's ok for me... nearly. "exec startx" It starts xfce4 for me - it's probably because I set is as "DEFAULT_SESSION" in ~/.xinitrc for slim (just like wiki says). But how to start kde? It's also in my ~/.xinitrc, but typing "exec startx kde" starts xfce4.

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

I think kde can be started with the 'startkde' command, so you could replace 'exec startx kde' with 'exec startkde'. If you do fancy things in your .xinitrc, then keep startx, but comment out any lines reffering to xfce4 or other programs you don't want to start with KDE.

If you kill SLiM from the CLI it will respawn, and you'll be able to log in just like after a regular startup.

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

That's right, but it's terribly inconvenient, the "heavier" kdm acts way faster, what's the point to use slim then?

well, but why would I wanna login twice? the first time I get dropped to the CLI, I am forced to login. Then u are telling me after I login to kill SLiM and then login again? What's the point in that?

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

...and for safety you have to logout from CLI after you respawn X... startx trick is much more convenient and reliable.

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

So as far as I understand, the only known solution is not to use SLiM?

Mhmm. Great.

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

Finally - it seems to work in 1.3.1!

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

For me there is still the same problem, even with 1.3.1 neutral

This problem is still rearing its ugly head, it's a shame but I think im going to shift to gdm for the moment.

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

someone's got a few patches on this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65869

one of them claims to fix the discussed problem.

his site doesn't have the slim.logrotate file required by his PKGBUILD so i haven't built it yet.  waiting for him to get back to me on that.  haven't had the time to just take the patches to ABS.  if someone wants to put together a PKGBUILD or can put a slim-patched on the AUR, that'd be sweeet.

edit: his sites been updated to contain all required files for his PKGBUILD, i just pacman -U'd it but won't be home to test until tonight.

So what are the results of testing? smile

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

incubos.  his patches worked as described, however on my system (and a few others) when your WM would start, slim would through up a maximized window of your slim theme's background image, the same window you get with the preview option that slim has.  annoying to have to close that everytime you log in.

anyways, i got rid of slim and went with a console login that starts X through .bashrc if i'm logging in on VT1.  it's useful since i bounce back and forth between init 5 and 3 quite a bit.  with this method i feel more in control.

Re: Getting SLiM to restart after ctrl-alt-backspace

Maybe Xinerama issue is fixed in some recent updates to this branch http://github.com/espenhw/slim-xinerama/tree/master
Btw I also dumped slim and switched to init 3 recently, and I found Qingy to fit perfectly for my setup. It can log you to the console but can also start an X session.

You need to install an RTFM interface.
