I am trying to update pacman, but I get this message:
failed downloading certainpackage from certainmirror
where certainmirror is every mirror I have listed and certainpackage is either pacman, libdownload, libarchive, or fakeroot
I have changed current to core in my pacman.conf file. What am I missing?

install the files diretly from the server i.e
pacman -U http://ftp.belnet.be/packages/archlinux/core/os/i686/{pacman-3.0.6-1,libdownload-1.1-3,libarchive-2.2.6-2}-i686.pkg.tar.gz

As detailed in all communication about the repo reorganisation, you should not change your /etc/pacman.conf file until after you have upgraded pacman. You need pacman 3.0.5-4 or greater.

I am still getting the error message after I changed pacman.conf back to the way it was.

As far as I remember, you have to use pacman -S pacman for this particular case instead of pacman -Syu or something.
