I have similar problem, mine is not a new install, for the last couple of days when I try to start any Openoffice app i get message that it crashed and caused a signal 11.

I have the same problem with a freshly installed and updated arch with openoffice.
/usr/bin/soffice: line 251 : 6464 Segmentation fault "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"
I'll file a bug report (couldn't find an existing one)
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8127 for followups

please make sure your system is up to date (-Syu). try to start without any old ~/.openoffice2 config folder. please post your graphic card.

I just reinstalled Arch, got xfce going again and I also get segment faults with OpenOffice apps. I did a pacman -Syu and OpenOffice install per the wiki.

I think the problem is mesa which pulls in fglrx-utils. A pacman -S libgl-dri might help

I removed fglrx and fglrx-utils and added ibgl-dri. Solved my problem.
