Untill now I have only discovered this problem in xterm! aterm won't even let me write æøå neither rxvt or rxvt unicode! Firefox I can write æøå just fine, and also in the tty outside Xorg. I'm not really sure where this problem belongs?
Well, my favorite terminal "aterm" won't even let me type "æøå" (Solutions welcome), xterm will, but it kinda acts like dead keys..
Let me explain.
If i press "æ" one single time xterm looks like this:
[dezza@dezza ~]$
You see, empty..
If i type it twice "ææ":
[dezza@dezza ~]$ æ
the same with ø and å, and also if combining them, for example "æøåæøåæøå" gives:
[dezza@dezza ~]$ æøåæøåæø (Missing å at last)
You see? It's kinda like using SHIFT+^ button, you need to type a letter or number after to see the text.
..

Have you tried screen's digraph system?

Try commenting the deadkeys part of your xorg.conf.
# Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
Seems to work for me.
I made it long
as I lacked the time to make it short...

I don't have that part, so no worries, and this ONLY happens in xterm, not Firefox or any other programs I've discovered yet (Just reinstalled) ..
Have you tried screen's digraph system?
What is that?

Running xterm with: "xterm -lc" solves it.
