why does my working copy (from another distro) of xorg.conf not work o

Hello,

I am trying to setup Arch on a Lenovo Z61m laptop.

The install is finished except for x system.  I cannot get the thing to run.  I get errors of no screen available or i810 no matching device (for my intel 945 graphics)

I know I have not provided specifics, but my question is , I think, general.  I ran a live CD (xubuntu) copied its working xorg.conf.  Then I simply inserted that "working" copy of xorg.conf into my Arch system, and still the same.  Why would an xorg.conf work in that distro, but not in Arch?

P.S. If you need screen output to answer this I'd appreciate a little assistance in how I would provide that since all I can use in the Arch system is "links" to access this forum.  I'm just not sure how to copy and paste the screen without using an X system....sorry.

Try pacman -S  xf86-video-i810.

Post the output from these. First for errors:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

And then for warnings:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW

Thanks, but I have already tried pacman -S xf86-video-i810

Output from cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE is :

OK I managed to get a copy of all the appropriate stuff....I think

Seems pretty obvious, don't you think? It's /usr/share/fonts.

A list of all your Xorg-related packages might be helpful:  pacman -Q | grep ^x

And for your paste problem, there's nopaste in [community].

It may be that the BusID is incorrect, comment the BusID line in the device section like this :

I don't think it's got anything to do with this but an incorrect assumption on the posters part that a working.xorg conf will give him a graphical user interface like in xubuntu.

In archlinux you have to setup your system from scratch(well, not completely, it's not LFS). If this is a correct assumption or not you might find your answer in the beginners guide in the wiki(listed on the wiki-frontpage).

Shouldn't "hwd -x" do the trick? (Some people don't like it, but it always worked for me)
