Realtime audio kernel enabled?

Hi everyone,
I'm just about to embark on a project running Arch on my laptop as a pro audio workstation. Just wanted to check if the arch kernel has already been optimised for realtime audio work?
I'm not quite sure what needs to be changed if it isn't but I've noticed in certain forums they say the kernel should have settings enabled for audio work.

Thanks.

Re: Realtime audio kernel enabled?

realtime requires a specific patch, which is not included in our stock kernel. There is a long thread elsewhere in the forum about Arch and pro audio which should give you everything you need.

Re: Realtime audio kernel enabled?

There is a Realtime preemption kernel patch available  (http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/) but it's not applied to any of the stock arch kernels and you'll need to either roll your own or check out the following link,

cheers,

There's something in the wiki as well. Just search for Pro Audio.

Re: Realtime audio kernel enabled?

check out the AUR, there is a patched kernel there. you will want to tweak the config a bit though.

Re: Realtime audio kernel enabled?

thanks for the helpful replies, I'm in the process of writing a tutorial on pro audio from Windows to Linux. I'm planning on using wineasio for some of the work, running Reaper as my host with some Win VST's, aswell as using some native Linux apps via alsa.

Can someone explain the differences between running the tweaked kernel against the standard one? My machine is quite powerful (dual core, 2GB RAM) so would it handle pro audio with the default kernel? Or is it completely useless for this task?(pops and clicks all through the recording, lag, etc)

I'm just trying the KISS the project as much as possible; obviously the first time I do something like this I'm going to run into problems but the less AUR bits and pieces I need the easier it'll be.
