Thunderbird / Firefox "Open with" applications

Perhaps someone can help me understand this a little better.

Normally when I open an attachment in Thunderbird I can choose Open with or Save to disk. The open with will then give me a whole load of applications to choose from.  That is what I expect. What I am actually seeing is Browse and having to go through and hunt the /usr/bin folder for the application. I am sure I do not need to install extensions for this and it does not seem to be a wm / desktop enviroment issue.

I have searched for this and lots point at deleting mimtypes, but this does not solve the problem. The same thing happens on firefox.

many thanks

Re: Thunderbird / Firefox "Open with" applications

Normally, you have to supply the destination of the application, which should open the attachment, the first time you open an attachment of that type. Then you can activate the Checkbox "Do this automatically for files like this from now on." and Thunderbird uses the associated application in the future.

Apart from that, there are plugins for Firefox for example that enable Firefox to open the document inside the browser, PDF for example. But i disabled the pdf plugin because i have the experience that it makes Firefox instable, so i prefer to open pdf's externally in acroread.

OK. Never remembered doing it before, for example a jpg would be associated with gqview or something by default, but it didn't happen with Arch and I wondered why. Thought I missed some configuration. Anyway thanks.
