/var/cache/pacman/pkg

Do i need the files in this folder? Its taking up quite a bit of space on my drive. I can't imagine they need to be there if the packages are already installed.

Re: /var/cache/pacman/pkg

Pacman caches previously downloaded/installed packages there.  You don't need them, but they might be useful every once in a while when you need to downgrade something to an earlier version.  They can be removed with pacman -Sc (removes just "old" packages) or pacman -Scc (which removes all packages from cache).

Re: /var/cache/pacman/pkg

You can clear really old packages using pacman -Sc (keeps just latest package).  Clear all packages using pacman -Scc
