when to start xbindkeys when running fluxbox

I'm using xbindkeys for a bit of keyboard remapping and want it to start automatically. I'm using fluxbox so the obvious place to put it was in the .fluxbox/startup file. When I do that it does start (ps shows it running) but it doesn't work and I have to kill it and start it from the command line.

I've also tried putting it in .xinitrc which I don't think is actually being called but I tried anyway.

When started from the command line it works fine.

I'm running gdm if that makes any difference.

So where should I start it?
