I love pacman, becouse i've read, and the little use I've had.
But other distros like sabayon (gentoo) my last one proved, has a very good X configuration system.
It is open source, you can add it to the distro, or any other good xconfigurator, even in text mode.
I am reading X wiki in spanish and english, and still have no X working, with an ATI X800, and fglrx is suposed to work, but it doesn't with this distro.
I had problems too with internet conection, but it was solved by "dhcpcd eth0" if someone has the same problem, and a dhcp network, but I will have to make it automatically some day that X will work.
I downloaded & install (pacman) GNOME, KDE and Xorg latest stable.

Show your xorg.conf and all (EE) lines after startx command here. We will help you.
In Arch you will learn to do everything yourself.

Just change
eth0="something"in your /etc/rc.conf to
eth0="dhcp"Cheers Sigi
edit: And to your problems with X: as ProzacR suggested, the output of grep EE < /var/log/Xorg.0.log would be helpfull!
