install  imagemagick and use import to take screanshots or use gimp

How can I take screenshots of my desktop?

If you are using Gnome, use the "Take Screenshot" option from the Gnome Menu.  It will save a file in ".png" format only, I believe.

yep, it's so easy:

import -root name_for_screenshot.extension

For example:

import -root screen01.png
