How to return gnome to english

I set up my locale to bg_BG.CP1251 and now gnome is in Bulgarian (which doesn't bother me (much) but I prefer it in english. But If I switch the locale to anything else I'm unable to read cyrillic characters in gedit so my question is: How to return gnome to english and keep my locale settings unchanged.

Re: How to return gnome to english

Different ways to solve this:
1) set the global locale to english and then use "LANG=bg_BG.CP1251 gedit" for gedit
2) convert files to UTF8 - iconv -f cp1251 -t utf8 input.txt > output.txt
3) use a text editor that can change encodings on the fly, VIM can, im sure KDE's editors can too, also you can read text files with your browser if you dont need to edit them, you can select encodings then too.

I'd say go with option 2, then your files should be readable anywhere.

Re: How to return gnome to english

Isn't there an option in gnome for changing languages?

Re: How to return gnome to english

First off, do NOT use LANG=whatever for Gedit, unless you want Gedit in another language.

Set the locale to an UTF8 english locale, and you'll be able to read ANY language from ANY app. Or at least if you have the appropriate Unicode fonts. Don't use non-UTF8 locales systemwide unless you know for certain that you need to.

Re: How to return gnome to english

Well on my system if I use locale bg_BG UTF8 I'm no longer able to read most of my cyrillic characters...

Re: How to return gnome to english

Hm. Did you try to revert to an en_US.UTF8 locale? Also, did you install fonts correctly? Try installing any font package (any package will do), and then restarting X.

EDIT:
I'm on en_US.UTF8 locale and I have no trouble reading Cyrillic, Japanese, and any other script.

foxbunny, the cyrillic text files he has arent in unicode, he needs to convert em to unicode using iconv.

Re: How to return gnome to english

Well I guess that's the problem - my cyrillic files aren't in unicode (because most of my cyrillic files are from the Windows partition and are in Windows 1251 encoding (corresponding to the linux CP 1251).
I have all the font packages that include cyrillic characters installed, and even copied most of my Windows installation (I used jacman, used as a search word Cyrillic and installed everything) so it's not missing fonts related problem hmm I would seem like I'll have to start converting my files one by one hmm

Do you have both cp1251 and UTF8 locales in /etc/locale.gen?

Toss me one of those files, if you want. I can see if it loads on my Arch installation. If it works here, then it should be no problem.

EDIT:
Just occured to me. Can you maybe open those files in a web browser and optinally set the encoding manually? If it works, you could copy&paste the text back into an editor.

Here is my locale.gen
However if I use more than one locale I must apply it everytime I reboot and also if my locale isn't set to bg_BG.CP1251 I can't type cyrillic into wine applications...
About the browser thing... well I think that can happen as opera has builtin windows encodings.

Re: How to return gnome to english

Okay. I see.

Now, try this. In your locale.gen uncomment the following lines:

#bg_BG.UTF-8 UTF-8
#en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8

The one that's already uncommented should remain uncommented. And generate the locales:

locale-gen

Now you should have the following locales: en_US.UTF8, bg_BG.UTF8, and bg_BG (cp1251).

In your rc.conf specify the locale as en_US.UTF8.

LOCALE="en_US.utf8"

I think you'd need to reboot here.

The wine apps should behave as usual. At least they do on my box.

EDIT:
I might be wrong but isn't there a setting in wine config that says which locale shoud the wine system use? Also, 2k and XP should be Unicode-capable unlike 98.

EDIT2:
To temporarily switch locale for wine you can start your app like so:

LANG=bg_BG wine myprog
