Yesterday GNOME's desktop kinda...disappeared? I looked it up and it seemed to be nautilus's fault, and after clearing out ./gnome* and ./gconf* and /.nautilus* and restarting nautilus several times I gave up and started a KDE session, which worked fine.
This morning, though, KDE freezes before it can ever reach the desktop. CTRL+ALT+Backspace back to the session switcher, and XFCE now can't load its desktop either. Thunar and Nautilus refuse to work. I had to open up a document, so I used konqueror, but after opening that a few times it stopped working too, as did dolphin. The only working session I can get is fluxbox, using opera to browse my hard drive.

did you check for file system corruption?
did you try with a different user?

I swear, I restarted the computer several times, powered it down then turned it back on, restarted X, etc. with no avail.
I turn the computer on in the afternoon and it works fine. *shrug*
