I installed Arch and put openbox on it tonight, and I'm very happy with it, except for one rather strange problem. I'm running at the highest resolution I can, 1600x1200, and the desktop is bigger than my screen! I can pan over a little bit and such. While not a huge problem, it is rather annoying. I tried changing the xorg.conf but to no avail. If I drop the resolution it just gets worse, obviously. I'd really like to be able to see all of my desktop. Anyone had this problem and know how to fix? I've got an Intel 945G btw if it matters.

did you use Xorg -configure to config your system?

I did. what do I need to configure? is there a configuration for the size of my monitor or something?

Just look for the Screen section and edit the Modes lines to fit your physical resolution.

You can also use xrandr -s [width]x[height] to set your screen resolution. Use xrandr -q to see a list of resolutions supported.

I tried changing the modes in the screen section in xorg.conf to no avail, didn't even change the resolution. I got chgres to change it, but the only ones available were 1600x1200 which is what I had to begin with and lower. I'll try the xrandr thing when I get home but I have a feeling it won't be any different from chgres.
On another note, I'm really glad to see prompt and useful responses. It's good to see that. I think I'll like this community.

u could try with xvidtune , adjust the screen alignment and get the new modeline and stamp it in the
Section Monitor of xorg.conf
Are u listening?

okay, so this xvidtune thing seems like it would work but every time I try to make an adjustment and test it it says "Sorry you have requested a mode-line that is not possible or not supported by your hardware configuration." Any other suggestions or solutions to this?

On my laptop I had to use 915resolution from AUR "community" to get my highest resolution to work.
#pacman 915resolution
add following line to rc.local for 1280x800
rc.local /usr/sbin/915resolution 38 1280 800 24
Here is some more info:

so I tried the 915resolution, and it says that 1920x1440 is available, but when I try to run openbox it says something about exceeding 190Hz, or something. 234 is the number it gives. really starting to bug me, I've tried lots and nothing seems to work. xvidtune doesn't do anything, I can't change the res in xorg.conf, and chgres works but doesn't give anything higher than 1600x1200. I just want my desktop to fit my screen!

You don't have a viewport defined in your xorg.conf? If not, you could try it out - make it the same dimensions as your desired resolution. If you do, adapt the dimensions or delete it altogether.
