UK Mirror

I saw somebody else having UK mirror problems as well as me, and answered as below then though a new thread was needed.

The uk mirror has been out of action for sometime unfortunately.  Anyone got plenty of bandwidth to host one ??

I noticed Gentoo has mirror held by Virgin media, would this have been paid for? would they host for Arch? Anyone know who to contact?

Who in Arch would i need to contact about mirrors?  I would be happy to try and contact virgin media.  I think they would be a reliable host.

Ideas? Thoughts? Comments?

Re: UK Mirror

The university of Kent has a UK mirror service that you can host on - I believe for free.
See here for contact details.

http://www.mirrorservice.org/Help/Contact_Us

They host plenty of other distros so should be able to help.
If not, then I think there's a similar set-up at the university of Warwick that might be of use.

Hope this helps.

Re: UK Mirror

Thank you, I will look into this, who looks after the main arch mirror at ftp://ftp.archlinux.org?.  I guess i would need there permission to go ahead first.

Thanks

Gary

Re: UK Mirror

I've made the request at Kent, and have asked that - if this happens - it could be made the official UK mirror.
I don't think you need permission to host the arch mirror since there are unofficial mirrors listed in the wiki - but we can sort all this out once we know what Kent say.

I'll post back when i hear anything.

Re: UK Mirror

Quick update.

Have mentioned this to Aaron Griffin, who seems to be in favour of a new mirror.
Have posted a feature request re the need for a new mirror and the possibility that Kent uni might host it.

Waiting and seeing...

Re: UK Mirror

No news from Kent but we have the all-clear to set up a new UK mirror from the Arch people though.
Top of my to-do list for Monday is to give Kent a ring and speak to someone in person.
I'll post back with details of how it went then.

Re: UK Mirror

Good News!

Kent have provisionally agreed to do it - providing they have enough space, though this shouldn't be a problem.
Next step is to get the synching info from the devs and pass it on to Kent - then we should have our new UK mirror!

Will have to sort this tonight though since am at work and pressed for time...

Re: UK Mirror

We have a new UK mirror!

See here for details:

http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp.archlinux.org/

Change repo source to

http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp. … re/os/i686

(+ community, testing etc. - example for i686)

Just upgraded with it now so can confirm it works.

** Have also started new thread on this to attract more attention to it **

Re: UK Mirror

Any idea what their sync schedule is? I'm fairly spoilt for choice already around here, but you can never have too many mirrors - and this is just next door to me. smile

Well done on this - thanks.

On yeah - it's maxing out my download as I type. smile

Re: UK Mirror

No idea neutral

But it must be fairly regular - I Syu'd last night and again at mid-day today and got updates both times.

They host a load of distros so must know what they're doing yikes

All thanks to the UK Mirror Service!
