i have an acer travelmate 2440 using an ati radeon xpress 200m 5a62. cannot get direct rendering working. been trying some of the things other people have done that have this problem. am running the opensource drivers not the proprietary version. in my xorg.log i read 3 lines that concern me. (ii) radeon(0) direct rendering broken on xpress 200 and 200m (ww) radeon(0) Option "dri) is not used (ww) radeon(0) direct rendering disabled my question is, is this something i have or haven't done? or does the line about it being broken mean that it simply will not work? thank you

You should use the proprietary drivers instead (fglrx) if you want to have direct rendering. Try following these instructions :

I would even recomment installing the 8.41 fglrx-driver from testing. It sometimes shows an irritation at the right bottom of the screen (watermark bug?) but it really improves performance a lot
Or you just wait a few days for the new fglrx to be released - That one should have at least the performance of the 8.41 but without the bugs and with full AIGLX-support.

thanks guys, figured that opensource just didn't support direct rendering and switched to fglrx and it works. so we may as well call this solved. thank you
