Gentoo vs Arch

yes its that nice topic again cool BUT this time its more todo with the users then the system

What am I talking abt? blowing the crap out if each other in computer games \o/
I am sure a few Arch users play some FPS using Arch (UT2004, W:ET... the list isn't too bad) so I am opening the floor to an inter-${distro,clan} war

quite a few months a few of us on #gentoo-chat formed distro-wars with the aim to have different gamers from different distro blow each other up. nothing really came of it (a few gentoo vs debian in ET kinda thing) but its time to re-kindle it again

Two big games are on the horizon: UT3 and QuakeWars.
QuakeWars has been out for a couple of weeks (for windows) and a few of us in #gentoo-chat that couldn't wait for the linux-clients. HOWEVER... the linux-client for QuakeWars (and ZOMG!!! it is such a GREAT!!! game) is expected end-of-month so the rest of [moo] (our clan-ish) will be getting it.
Also UT3 is due towards the end of the year

So what do you think? any Arch-gamers here who would be interested in a distro-war? QuakeWar's? (or other games) drop by irc.freenode.net#gentoo-chat if you are

http://larrytheclan.com  <-- still a very W.I.P but hope to use it as clan-page as well as hub for distro-wars

I'm up for it if it involves urban terror or tremulous.

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

Sounds, interesting. I used to be good at FPS back in the days, but I can go through intensive practice again, to add my force to the Arch Team. I used to be in the Gentoo side, but things have changed big_smile. Well, I'm practicing with nexuiz. But will go to #gentoo-chat later, and see what I can do.

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

Sounds interesting, I'll see if I can get a new VGA card (bought a new box... and of course my old agp card isn't good for it and I'm stuck with the inboard video)

Wow, nice idea. Too bad I'll have to wait for a new ATi driver before I can even dream of participating. sad

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

I'm suggesting tremulous as the game we play. You gentooers are aliens big_smile and we Archers are humans cool. I'm hard at practice, and hope to hear from you again.

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

I'd like to vote for Counter Strike: Source as the game to play.

And I'll check out Quake Wars, I see the demo has Gold rating in wine.

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

I just picked up The Orange Box on Steam, both Portal and Team Fortress 2 work great under wine. So, I guess I'd vote for a little TF2 action.

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

+1 for nexuiz

You barely need a computer to play that game and it's excellent.

Though, in keeping with the Arch philosophy maybe we should make it nethack? wink

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

Ok, people, this is going to evolve to something more serious, I have been in talks with Naib, and there are plans for a distro wars site. This is really interesting to me, why? because is a way of entertainment, no distro is harmed by this (unless your users suck at playing lol). Linux has always lacked in the area of gaming, or so the windows user say, now is time to demonstrate we are gamers as well.

So here is the list of games we are planing to play:

The free as in monetary:
Tremulous (is in community, and plays smooth)
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (is in community)

The non-free as in monetary:
Unreal Tournament 2004
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Please since this post, post +1 and your preferred free game and non-free game, just one please.

For me is: +1 Tremulous and +1 Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

What about warsow? It seems it has quite a few linux players, I regularly see some on public servers (and I doubt they all say they are using it). And some of them are pretty skilled.

I am not sure I like the idea though, I like joining a random public server, whenever I want, for doing a quick game and be done with it smile
But that's just me, you are free to do whatever you want.

Has any of you considered Legends?
It's an interesting game, and you can fly.

Edit: Here's a URL - http://legendsthegame.net/

A PKGBUILD already exists in AUR.

Well, I prefer it to be on community since, many people in arch does not trust packages in AUR if they are not flagged as safe or moved to community.

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

Can we play both sides of the fence? wink

I'm all for UT2004 and everything else on my desktop, since it can run it, but I'm limited to tremulous and nexuiz on my laptop, as it's several years old.

Well, I installed it after reviewing the PKGBUILD.

What?! Did nexuiz got a 1000x performance boost over the last year or what?
It was painfully huge and slow when I tried it. Not comparable to quake 3 / tremulous.
I remember there were some stupid graphical effects that slowed it down badly, but even after disabling them, it was still not great.

Also, I have an one year old laptop (i945gm intel chipset) , and warsow at the lowest details / effect is not even playable. And warsow is far less demanding than nexuiz.

Re: Gentoo vs Arch

@ sweiss, yeah I think I trust almost every package on AUR, but I know many people that don't so I'm just thinking about them big_smile.

@ everybody saying: "Hey why is <fillintheblank> not included? well, maybe they will be played we just want to make a solid base of players of one game, after that it's all easy, we just say, hey, lets play <fillintheblank> as must of us have it.

Well, it seems we have a good base of tremulous gamers, thats good, lets now make this official, I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for the great response, we are gonna frag those Gentoo users, in tremulous or <fillintheblank>.

PS: Start practicing big_smile I'm doing it as well.;)
