(solved)missing start menu icons

did pacman -Syu yesterday and got a major upgrade. problem was i lost all my openoffice ,audacity.bzflag icons from the start menu. plus a few more. programs were still there, i could start them from the run command. just a little inconvenient that way. anyway i rolled back a few packages trying to find the problem and found after i rolled back to xproto-7.0.10-1 all the icons came back. now i only have one minor problem i'd like to straighten out. nothing shows up in the most used applications section of start menu. and that one i can't seem to figure out. any ideas? thanks

Re: (solved)missing start menu icons

Logically /etc/profile.d/xorg.sh which sets the environment variables to enable many apps wanting X.org to scan for information such as location of .desktop files, has been moved to libx11. The libx11-package is the first package to make it senseful to have these set. Thus, if you've upgraded to a full [testing] environment, you should be able to skill scan. It sounds like you only partially updated you system though, replacing xproto with the new one and logged in anew.

Re: (solved)missing start menu icons

not really sure i understand . i'm running stock arch linux kernel with KDE. as far as i know the only thing i have from testing is libx11 because it's needed for compiz-fusion. so i'm not sure what you mean by full testing environment. also don't know what you mean by skill scan. everything is updated as of this morning the new xproto loses a bunch of my programs in kmenu. if i roll back to previous version they come back although they don't show up in most used apps. which is actully rather minor. since i was without a computer for 6 months i really only have about 6 months with linux. the best way to learn is to jump in try new things and when it breaks figure it out. but this one's sems to be beyond my skill level, even though it's relatively minor. i would like to understand. thank you

Re: (solved)missing start menu icons

xproto-7.0.10-1 contained a file /etc/profile.d/xorg.sh which has been moved to libx11 1.1.3-4 in the testing repo. If you upgraded using the testing repo this should have been upgraded. Check that libx11 from testing is in fact installed.

Re: (solved)missing start menu icons

I have the same problem in the same situation. The only package from testing I have is libx11, but since it is now on core, I just downloaded and installed that one (which now included the xorg.sh). I noticed that my XDG_DATA_DIRS is now correct (includes /usr/share). The thing is that I still can't see all applications on the menu.
I've run update-desktop-database, but nothing changed.
Any ideas?

... and 5 seconds later I find the solution tongue
I had to ran buildsycoca, and now it displays everything. big_smile

Re: (solved)missing start menu icons

definitely had libx11 1.1.3-4 installed.installed the new xproto and kept losing the icons. had to reinstall libx11 after installing xproto and everything is now fine.

Re: (solved)missing start menu icons

It's a problem with having the new libx11 installed prior to the full upgrade.

Just 'pacman -Sy libx11' to reapply and fix.

Re: (solved)missing start menu icons

Ok, I'm having this problem also.

Is their an easy way to install libx11 and or remove libx11-xcb?  When I try to remove/unistall libx11-xcb pacman will not remove because it is depended on by other programs.  Last time I ran accross something like this I removing the package and everything that depended on it with one pacman command, then one by one I had to reinstalled the packages that had depended on it....

I have no problem doing that, but just wondered if there was a better way.

#pacman -S libx11

Yes, that's what I was looking for.  I had tried -f "force", but not -d "Skips all dependency checks.".

Also, all my icons are back!

Thank You!

P.S.  Thank you for answering even though it had been a few days, I waited for an answer so that I could learn something new.
