Hello,
I'm quite new to linux. Of all (well the ones I tested with the 2.6.22 kernel) distributions arch seems to please me most. And I installed it without any mayor problems, except every time at boot I need to set back the brightness of my screen.
And now I'm having troubles installing synaptics touchpad driver. My laptop is the compaq 6710b. Touchpad is working without the driver, but with xorg.conf configured for synaptics as the wiki says, it doesn't. I want the synaptics driver because I'd like to be able to use the scrollpart for scrolling. Together with the scrollpad I'm using an usb mouse, which is working out of the box. Here's xorg.conf:

Since I'm having intel x3100 (965gma) graphic card I have xf86-video-intel xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard and X from [testing] repository. I've installed archlinux i686 plus kdemod.
I hope someone has any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Are you using testing/synaptics too? If you're using everything an x server from testing, you'll need synaptics from there too I found.

thanks for the reply... yes I am. Just to be sure I did it again, I get this install message...

support when configuring the kernel (CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2). You also
need support for the evdev interface (CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV). If you
compile evdev as a module, make sure it is loaded before starting
the X server, as it will not be auto-loaded

I'm using my synaptics touchpad happliy, but I'm not using testing... But maybe this helps:

I can't determine the problem, cause everything seems to work, synclient, modules evdev and psmouse.... I tried different inputs in the "device" line of the "Touchpad" in my xorg.conf. So for example, I changed from mouse0 to mous1 to and I tried /dev/psaux as the installer told me so... But nothing... no reaction at all.
By the way... I disabled Load "synaptics" in my xorg.conf cause I read in the xorg log that it was loaded twice... as you can see in the current xorg log, synaptics is still loaded. It shouldn't make a difference right?.

I did it!
The only thing I thought was odd about the xorg.0.log was that it said Touchpad doesn't report core events...
So I tried adding it to my xorg.conf... first with no success since I added it in the DeviceInput Section like "SendCoreEvents" "True".
Then I saw somewhere someone who putted the line SendCoreEvents in the serverlayout part. In stead of "AlwaysCore". Almost sure it wouln't help anything I tried it. This solved the problem!!!
I can scroll and everything, with minimum input in xorg.conf. Before I had just disabled all the lines that seemed unimportant to me. Well, it seems that they weren't. My touchpad now WORKS!
