Xorg hangs on startx

Good day everyone!
I just installed a new version of archlinux(I'm completely new to ArchLinux). Now Xorg will not start. On entering startx, the screen will go to standby mode and my Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights on my keyboard start to flash. I can't get back to the terminal by ctrl+alt+backspace nor with ctrl+alt+f1 or anything else, i have to reboot.
I'm using x64 ArchLinux with a Ati Radeon X800XL

I believe the flashing keyboard LEDs indicate a kernel panic or some similar badness. You may want to check the file /var/log/everything.log to see if it has any information about what is going on before the hang. Another possibility is that there is some type of hardware problem. You can check the manual for your motherboard to see if the flashing LEDs mean anything in particular. Finally, at times KVM switches can cause this to happen when they are waiting for you to select a system to control, so if you are using a KVM remove it and see if the problem continues.

Also, I noticed your configuration uses the vesa driver for your ATI X800. You should be able to use the ati driver. It may help, though I can't guarantee it. Adjust the Device stanza in your xorg.conf as the following:

Well, at least it doesn't hang now. The problem now is the "(EE) No devices detected." message - it seems your card is not being detected. The X800 is a relatively new card and it could be that the X800 isn't supported by the ati driver. I looked around to try and find out exactly what the ati driver supports and it seems that the stock ati driver does not yet support the X800, but I couldn't find anything concrete. It is possible that you may have to use the ATI binary driver (fglrx).

To try the ATI proprietary drivers, do the following:

1. Make a backup copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. It doesn't work yet, but it's close. It may come in handy later.
2. As root do pacman -S fglrx fglrx-utils.
3. Add fglrx to your modules line in /etc/rc.conf.
4. Run aticonfig --initial to generate an xorg.conf file.
5. Restart your machine.

That's the basic process, but you will want to read Arch Linux ATI Wiki entry before you do this to get some idea of what is going on. I have read about people with 64-bit Linux running X800s perfectly with fglrx, so don't lose heart.

One problem is still left. If i restart X with ctrl+alt+backspace or use the gnome shutdown button, i will get the same display error i described all the way in my first post. The logs show nothing really usefully, AIGLX doesn't work yet, but that should be the problem.

First, have you rebooted your machine? Although it is not strictly necessary when changing the Xorg config, I've found  that sometimes I get weird artifacts when changing the X config and then just restarting X, especially when installing the proprietary drivers.

The ATI proprietary drivers (fglrx) do not support AIGLX. You must disable it with the following stanza in your xorg.conf:

I don't think this is the source of the problem, but you should add this to your config anyway.

Are you trying to use Compiz or Beryl? To use one of these with fglrx you need XGL, but I would recommend getting your system working correctly first before jumping into using one of these.

I would recommend going through your log and running mkfontdir on the directories that Xorg notes as problematic. There may be odd problems if X can't access one of the default fonts. You need to run mkfontdir in the directories in question, just like the log says. Restart X or run xset fp rehash once you've done this.

In your logs I also note the odd error

(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

Try running lspci and looking for your video card in the output, this will tell you where on the PCI bus lives, post the result for your video card. You'll need to look like something like the following:

The warning probably means that there is no second monitor attached?

I'll try the first things now and see if i helps.
EDIT: Fonts all setup up correctly now, but no difference noticed. AIGLX is disabled now too, but still i get the black-screen crash.

OK, that's interesting about what lspci reports, but you are probably corrent in that it has something to do with the possibility of having two monitors attached.

Anyway, after all this work it seems that perhaps there is some other issue, not necessarily related to Xorg itself. You mentioned you are using GNOME, do you use the GDM login manager? If not what login manager are you using? How do you have it set up? Do you include its daemon in your DAEMONS line in rc.conf or are you launching it from /etc/inittab? Also, when you get the black screen crash are the scroll lock and caps lock LEDs still flashing? If they are not flashing can you go to a console terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F1?

This has just occurred to me because I just switched from running KDM for KDE to slim and at first I had some problems similar to yours. I could boot and login in, but when I ended my session, slim would not restart properly. Anyway, let me know the answers to the above questions and let's see if anything else comes to mind.

Yes i am using GDM, and i launch it via etc/inittab like so:
x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon

Yes the lights are still flashing and i can not restart x or go to the console.

Uh oh. Well, my friend, I'm sorry to say that I'm about at my wit's end. You've got GDM set up the recommended way, so I see no problem with that. Going back to the fact that you appear to have a kernel panic, are you using a stock kernel or did you compile a custom kernel? If you've compiled a custom kernel, perhaps you should try a stock kernel and see what happens. If you're using a stock kernel, we need more information about what is happening when you end your GNOME session. Perhaps you could change /etc/inittab to boot into runlevel 3, log in, and run gnome-session or whatever it is that starts GNOME from the prompt. You could then see if this gives you any more information on the console when you log out.

Hopefully doing the above will give you some clues about what is going on.

This is the last error i get in /var/log/everything.log before the new entries start. This is new though, since i fixed the poweroff and reboot path in the gdm config(which didn'T help)

I can't logout from gnome, even if i start it in runlevel3, it will always crash. No matter if i reboot, logout, poweroff or switch to console.

I'm using the newest stock-kernel: 2.86.23-ARCH. It might have to do something with the video drivers as I've read reports of users having fewer problems with the new ATI drivers, but they don't support the new kernel yet, so I'll have to wait for that to happen to test that. Thanks for your great help so far!
