Nvidia MCP51 - ALC883 Audio chip: crackling sound

I got this problem for some time, i hear loud crackling sounds over the sound output when i play mp3s or movies, or any other media file, but i hear without problems the pcspeaker and the microphone works perfecrly, i can clearly hear my voice. This happens also with 1.0.15 (at least on Gentoo) driver but now i'm using 1.0.14 on this new installation of arch (i'm an arch newbie that changed from gentoo), my mainboard is an ASUS P5N-E-SLI with an integrated Realtek ALC883 soundchip, the module that alsa is using is snd-hda-intel, I don't know what autoprobing is doing, but i've tried model=3stack-6ch-dig with the same results.

Also the mixer behaves in a strange way, with no master and a headphone control with no bar but with only the unmute/mute buttons.

I think that archlinux is very good, and i'm trying it because is always at the bleeding edge of updates.

Hope i can finally fix this problem, now i'll try to recompile the kernel and install the latest alsa driver 1.0.15 from source.

Meanwhile if anyone has suggestions is very welcome!

I've tried oss too and i got a little and i mean a LITTLE better sound, so i mean the same crackling sound but less loud but still completly unhearable. I've read that the support for hda intel of oss is still not stable, at least when i tried oss. In my opinion, if you want sound on linux don't buy an ASUS P5N-E SLI, buy a mainboard with an ALC888 chip that is supported in most cases. I've tried an ASUS P5KC on Ubuntu and sound works perfectly (chipset ALC888) : http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3& … odelmenu=1

It's six months that i'm trying to fix this problem...

I've read a lot this topic, the problem is fixed for the chip on acer notebooks, the model used is model=acer, in the 1.0.15 version the best model for the ALC883 of the ASUS-P5N-E is model=3stack-6ch-dig because is a 3 jack, 6 channel with s/pidf, but for me the problem remains, whit model=acer i totally don't have sound.

It's difficult to say that ALC832/3/8 are supported there are a lot of configurations that may cause problems for now, probably in the next alsa release theese problem will be solved.

here's my experience with that:

I have an LG laptop with Intel HDA audio (82801G, ICH7 Family, rev 02, ALC883 - whatever all of that means, if anyone knows the better)...

I can get sound ok from my headphone jack; external speakers only emit odd yet faint crack and pop sounds a few moments after I boot up.. Ive tried all forms of kernel module options and all that and nothing works.

Interestingly, I used to own a similar laptop of the same company, only slightly lower level model, which I *think* had the same sound hardware (but i might have been a little different). That laptop I had sound from external speakers no problem as well as the headphone jack - only problem with that one was that plugging in the headphones did not mute the external speakers.

Ive also read elsewhere some people thought it might be a bug with ALSA and this particular chipset / also that others noticed this problem from the time they upgraded to kernel 2.6.22.

I have 2.6.23 now and it still doesnt work.

This is one Id really like to get working. Its a bit embarrasing when you wanna show off your cool arch linux powered lappy to your friend and have to ask "do you have speakers I can plug in cause i cant get the sound to work ....."

Got my new rig up and running and the had no problem with sound! However, I don't thin I have the exact same hardware as the OP though. Here is the output of 'lspci -v'

kinfocenter seems to give more detailed information saying that it is a Realtek ALC883. No idea how to attach screenshot or I will.

ps kinfocenter give information on interrupt as well.
