Thanks to hplip changes, I can no longer print with my Deskjet F4140..

Hi. Ever since the upgrade of hplip, I've been unable to print. I searched the forums already and have removed hplip's entry from etc/rc.conf, as well as uninstalling the package. CUPS is up to date, but when I went through the "Add Printer" process, I couldn't figure out what the IP of my printer was. I clicked on the Network Printer link, but it didn't really offer any solid help. How am I supposed to figure out the IP address of something that's connected through USB?

The error I received before I removed the printer through CUPS basically told me that the device wasn't connected and it would retry in 30 seconds. I checked the connection myself (USB) and it was fine.

did you just update hplip or your entire system?
if you have sane and libgphoto2 installed ensure they have the latest available version

check /etc/udev/rules.d/
sane and liggphoto rules must have a lower number then 55-hp rule

You don't make sense here.

If it's an HP printer connected via USB, make sure you installed hplip and started CUPS with /etc/rc.d/cups start, then switch on your printer, go to http://localhost:631 and add it.
The DeviceURI line should look like hp:/par/DESKJET_930C?device=/dev/parport0, but that's just mine (and not USB). The hp: part is important.

This is the result of an ls...

xelados@sporkbox: /etc/udev/rules.d $ ls
total 216K
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 220 2007-09-07 02:57 00.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 82 2007-06-04 04:31 10-wacom.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 86K 2007-10-22 13:31 53-sane.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 59K 2007-11-09 01:06 54-gphoto.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 206 2007-10-18 04:13 60-cdrom_id.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.1K 2007-09-19 14:08 60-pcmcia.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.2K 2007-10-18 04:13 60-persistent-storage-tape.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 390 2007-10-18 04:13 75-cd-aliases-generator.rules.optional
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.1K 2007-10-18 04:13 75-persistent-net-generator.rules.optional
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 82 2007-10-28 14:55 90-hal.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 201 2007-09-10 19:47 device-mapper.rules
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21K 2007-10-24 04:37 udev.rules

When I try to print a test page, the CUPS interface throws an error at me:

"/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"

And this is the information on the printer itself:

Description: HP Deskjet F4140 with Scanner
Location: Daniel's Room
Printer Driver: HP DeskJet F4100 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: usb://HP/Deskjet%20F4100%20series?serial=CN75I3T2QQ04TJ

I apologize for the bump, but I'm still having the same "foomatic-rip failed" error...

Developers generally won't see your bugs here, and if they do, not for a while. You'll get more attention at http://bugs.archlinux.org where your bug will be forwarded directly to the correct person.

The same thing happened to my photosmart c4180... about the same time your issue originally did, actually.

I got it woking again by completely removing all of the packages (also used the nosave switch) listed in the cups wiki page, and then following it's steps.  Wish I could be more descriptive, but that's pretty much all I did.
