Re: AMD/ATI fglrx 8.42.3 Experiences

holycrap - new release!  I must package this tonight!  big_smile

I'm always jumping on new releases - even when they let me down, each new one feels like Christmas-time.  Maybe this one will be awesome.  Who knows?!

Catalyst 7.11, huh?  No more fglrx 8.4x.xx?  I wonder what I'm going to do here... should I rename the packages to 'catalyst'?  Should I keep the fglrx name, and use the force flag since it's going to be a "lower" version number than the previous version?  I dunno!  big_smile

Re: AMD/ATI fglrx 8.42.3 Experiences

don't be so excited about this release...
the only thing that changed for me, is that it doesn't need a patch for kernel 2.6.23/24 and the amdcccle starts now.

compiz still doesn't work with this fglrx and xorg-server 1.4...

also try glxgears and watch the memory of the process grow and grow...  (about 2mb/s!!!)

sad

Re: AMD/ATI fglrx 8.42.3 Experiences

Yeah, after the phoronix link was posted I checked out their forums - seems the driver is about on par as far as performance with AIGLX, and the crazy memory leak.   However, no external 2.6.23 patch and amdcccle working is at least some benefit.

I'm wondering if the under-mouse/bottom-right-corner corruption is gone.  Or if dual-head doesn't die a horrible horrible death.  I will experiment.

The mouse thing got fixed by just switching the driver, using a USB mouse.

I also encountered the artifacts bug, sometimes two line appear in the lower right corner and under the cursor, switching VTs makes this go away.

Try adding

Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"

to your device section for fglrx in xorg.conf.  People have reported that to fix the onscreen corruption.

This seems to have fixed it for me. No more artifacts in the bottom right hand corner. I was panicked after upgrading...it looked like a row of dead pixels.

Re: AMD/ATI fglrx 8.42.3 Experiences

Great release! So this pretty much fixed nothing in 1 month smile

There probably really is just 1 or 2 driver devs working with linux on AMD/ ATI. sad

Edit:BTW are there any tweaks im unaware of to make compiz work with new xorg?

Re: AMD/ATI fglrx 8.42.3 Experiences

Well, they fixed a couple of small things - compiles with kernel 2.6.23 out of the box and amdcccle now works with an xcb-enabled libx11.  I'm told there are other changes too, but I haven't noticed anything yet.  I'm running without XAANoOffscreenPixmaps right now to see if the corruption is gone, and I haven't seen it yet, so maybe it's fixed?  Dunno.

Do you have the memory leak in glxgears? I'm considering to upgreade but if it's really there, i'll pass

I personally don't see the memory leak, but other people have reported it still being there.

It's there for me... I have re-enabled XAANoOffscreenPixmaps.

It's still there on my testbox and mainbox.

@Cerebral

with the next CD Edition "core dump" or maybe "total failure" I don't know how they will call it, I have a Testbox 64bit ready for mess around with ATI drivers. If you still need some testers contact me via PM.
