hello!
i keep getting the message:
"cannot connect to ....."
"getservbyname: illegal seek"
for almost all servers in pacman, except the portuguese (.pt) server, and the download fails there sometimes too (mozilla-firefox for example):
".....pt: HTTP/1.1 404 not found"
"getservbyname: no such file or directory"
i'm not using the main server, cause i wanna save bandwith costs.
i've been having this problem for the last few weeks, and it's always the same. i've done a "spring cleaning" with pacman, removed all the packages i don't use/need, but i don't think that i removed smthg important cause pacman would have told me that i need that pkg for pacman (hopefully).
i hope some1 can help
EDIT: pacman (and all packages) are up-to-date

Can you post the repositories from your /etc/pacman.conf? Since pacman is statically linked, it shouldn't matter what other libs you've upgraded/etc. I'm wondering if it is a syntax error(s) in your pacman.conf file.

never changed anything except commenting the main arch server.

So much for that idea. I'm trying to duplicate your problem, but the mirrors seem to be working for me.
Are you noticing any other network oddities?

can you ping, traceroute or lft one of the mirrors?
does it work with the main server?
The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.
