gtkam/gphoto annoyance

When I start gtkam, my camera gets initialized and appears under the following directory structure:

Kodak CX7530
   store_00010001
       DCIM
          100K7530

If I click directly on my camera, or at any point above it (such as DCIM), I get the following error message:

An error occurred in the io-library ('Bad parameters'): Could not query kernel driver of device.

If I do nothing but click on my camera device it will not work, repeatedly.  If I instead first click on any point above the camera, such as DCIM, I get the same error message, but when I then click on my camera, it now works and the pictures load, which I can then save to my computer.  So it ultimately works, but I must go through this process.  Any idea what's going on?  I've used the same camera with another distro (it starts with a 'g') without this issue.

By the way, when I googled for this issue I found only situations where the camera would not work period and the proposed solution (upgrading packages) is outdated.

Thanks in advance.
